PopKissKiss Web Round-up: 10/20/11

Time for another round of web links:
sakuran manga
MANGA

  • Yen Press will publish the OEL manga versions of two YA bestselling series: Cassandra Clare’s Infernal Devices trilogy (above center) & Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Chronicles of Nick.
  • In January 2012, Viz will cease printing Shonen Jump magazine, and replace it with Weekly Shonen Jump Alpha, a digital-only publication. There’s a lot to like about this: Viz has a decent pricing model (a yearly subscription costs $25.99; access to one issue costs $0.99); translations will be almost simultaneous with Japanese releases (only two weeks behind); there’s a faint possibility of a Shojo Beat resurrection (okay, I just made that up). That said, fans of the big three (Naruto, Bleach, & One Piece) are used to scanlations that come out 24-48 hours after release in Japan. Maybe Viz should step up translations of those titles only? People be entitled, yo.
  • CLAMP’s latest title, Gate 7 (above right), arrives in stores October 23rd. So. Pretty.

DRAMAS

  • I’m so excited for Flower Boy Ramyun Shop (above), which starts Oct. 31st, that it’s a little sad. I guess I’ve been searching for another great trendy romcom for awhile now, and keep getting disappointed (see: Oh My Lady!, Boys Before Flowers, My Princess, Coffee House, etc.).
  • I love the Skip Beat manga, but didn’t have high hopes for the Taiwanese drama adaptation. Then they announced that ab-flasher/self-fondler (kinda NSFW) Siwon would play Ren, and I was like “Heck yeah!” Annnd…then they released a drama trailer, and I’m back to meh. We’ll see. Retitled “Extravagant Challenge,” the drama will air every Sunday starting December 18th.

HALLYU

  • I came across not one, but two mainstream media pieces on how K-pop has invaded Japan (at The Atlantic & at The Guardian). According to the articles, K-pop has taken off due to sexier choreography & personas, as well as a more modern or “Westernized” sound. Total shitstorm in the comments, of course.

PopKissKiss Web Round-up: 09/26/11

Finally, another PKK links round-up! Heads-up that I’m still processing a huge backlog, so some of these links are old, and some new stuff is missing. I’m still trying to balance two blogs plus freelance work (my day job), but I’ll tentatively say: expect new posts here Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from here on out. They may be short posts, and I may miss a few days here and there, but that’s my plan. Now, for the links:

soulless manga MANGA

  • Deal alert: Anna over Manga Report is selling her old manga for $5 a volume (plus free shipping). She’s a great seller: I ordered four books from her, and they arrived quickly and in like new condition.

RANDOM

  • A big thank you to @MagicalEmi for tweeting about Pirates in Love, a popular Japanese love simulation game. It is available now in English, for free from the iTunes store (here is a preview). I don’t even know, you guys.

ANIME

  • Ouran High Host Club is a diamond in a pile of anime coal. It’s also available subtitled, legally, for free on YouTube.

MANGA

  • Manga to read: Dinosaur Hour, a manga that pairs science with the humorous notion that “the dinosaurs died out because they were just too stupid to live”. Also, all of Deb Aoki’s grown-up manga recommendations.

DRAMAS/TV

  • Korean girl group SNSD (“Gee”) has a new reality show called Hello Baby, where the group babysits a 9-month-old child for a day. I’d love to see a similar show with a boy band (not necessarily Korean–I wouldn’t mind seeing the Jonas Brothers change poopy
diapers & get barfed on) and a higher ratio of babies.

Super Junior's Eunhyuk & Leeteuk

Super Junior’s Eunhyuk & Leeteuk showed us how much fun such a show might be when Alex tricked them into babysitting the quadruplets (*videos removed*). In fact SuJu members would be perfect, as they are many & hilarious. Pretty please, television gods?

I’m still working on longer posts, and getting distracted by shiny objects and food. Some links in the meantime (apologies for the Twitter overlap):

MANGA

  • Right Stuf has a 33% off sale on all Yen Press titles. Yen Press is one of my favorite manga imprints for its consistently high quality content & production values; for advice on what to buy, see There It Is, Plain as Daylight.
  • Manga I want to read (links to reviews): Detroit Metal City (one, two, three, movie poster at right), Fire Investigator Nanase (one, two), and Nabari no Ou (one).
  • I linked to it in my last post, but in case you missed it: John Jakala provides incontrovertible proof of Tokyopop’s quality drop.

DRAMAS

  • Finally, Right Stuf has a rare 35% off sale on YA Entertainment’s K-drama box sets. You can preview some series at Dramafever or Crunchyroll; I also recommend Hotelier, My Girl, Damo, & Sandglass.

ALSO

  • Kate Dacey has described my idea of bookseller/buyer heaven: a real New England bookstore with a) tons of books, some out-of-print, all for 20-80% off and b) no coffee shop or overstuffed chairs. I want to work there *sniff*.

MANGA

  • I had no idea how vibrant the manga Twitter community was until I signed up for an account 3 weeks ago. Seriously, if you like manga/anime/etc., get a Twitter account. If you need help getting started, Lori Henderson has a great manga Twittering guide; for more general advice, try Everyday Tweet.

NEWS/ISSUES

  • Huffington Post has a good “for dummies” article on former President Roh Moo-hyun, who committed suicide in the wake of corruption charges (charges he denied, and which came from a bribery investigation led by his political opponents).
  • Interesting Jezebel article (& comments!) on a female “hipster grifter” who succeeded partly because of the so-called “loathsome hipster Asian fetish.”

FOOD

  • Finally, I’m working on a series of snack-related posts. One post will be on chirimen-jako, or dried baby anchovies; I kept seeing them in cookbooks & T.V. shows and thus began to covet them. Turns out chirimen-jako have a dry, chewy texture & mildly salty taste (as well as lots of calcium). You serve them on top of rice or shredded daikon radish with a dash of soy sauce. I know they look scary (mmm, eyeballs!), but they’re delicious:
