I used to live there many years ago, and just went there last year with my fiance who had never been. a lot of what we did was visit my old haunts, which may not be all that interesting to others, but I would recommend the Liberty Bar restaurant and visiting the missions… not just the Alamo, but the outlying ones too. If you rent a car that is.
You also MUST have breakfast tacos at some point, and some really good Mexican food. Mi Tierra at Market Square is fun and yummy except that it is very crowded. So is the Riverwalk. Fun but crowded that is.
I think the Riverwalk is best early in the morning when not much is open and mostly only locals are around. The prickly pear margaritas are good at Zuni Grill on the Riverwalk.
I love San Antonio! I bet you’ll have lots of fun.
oh, and sorry to double post, but there can be some great stuff to see at the Blue Star Arts Complex, which is in the King William district which is also great with old homes to look at, etc. And just across the way from Blue Star is my favorite little icehouse, La Tuna, a fun laidback place to sit outside and have some beers. I spent many many hours there back when I was a recent college grad.
Hey, you’re just going to be a few hours from where we live! :)) I haven’t been to San Antonio yet, but my sister in law LOVES it there. She spent several months there for her USAF advanced training. She says the River Walk is pretty cool and there is the Alamo there, too. Have a great time!
Wow, thanks for the quick response! It’s a spur-of-the-moment trip–I’m really looking forward to it now!
Totally have to go to Mi Tierra at least once, it’s a 24 hour gorgeous Mexican restaurant. Must do the riverwalk boat tour.
Must try the Italian restaurant at Rivercenter, Lucianos. For great sushi, Sushi Zushi downtown. Take a trolly ride from the Alamo — don’t miss the Alamo nor the store.
i live in s.a. – for something off the beaten tourist trail, try madhatters in king william for brunch. carmen de la calle for live jazz, spanish tapas, and sangria. the botero exhibit at the san antonio museum of art is going on right now and it’s pretty impressive. have fun!
